James Bonn

Professor Emeritus at the University of Southern California, James Bonn has chaired the keyboard departments at three universities and concertized throughout Europe and all 50 of the United States. He has appeared as soloist in more than 30 works from the concerto repertoire under the batons of Antal Dorati, Dennis Russell Davies, Arthur Fiedler, Daniel Lewis, Helmuth Rilling and others.

Several of Bonn’s recordings pioneered present day interest in historic keyboard instruments. These were made for the Colt Clavier Collection in England, the Harvard Historical Anthology of Music and the Metropolitan Museum of Art Historic Instruments in Performance series. High Fidelity magazine gave a Critics Choice award for his recording on the1720 Cristofori piano.

More recently he has made compact discs for Pickwick, Music Masters, Judson Press, CRI, Tucson Festival Music, and New World Records.

As a collaborative artist, Bonn has had a distinguished career beginning in 1956 with violinist/conductor, David Zinman. This was followed by recital tours with Metropolitan Opera stars, harpsichordist for the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, pianist with the Vestavia and Concord Piano Trios and most recently two decades as pianist for the Los Angeles Piano Quartet.

After 4 decades of university teaching, Professor Bonn enjoys following former students' careers in keyboard performance, conducting, composition and academia as well as continuing his own schedule of adjudication, master classes, performance coaching and lecture recitals.
